Once again, iPhone users are pouncing on the latest operating system. In less than 48 hours since its launch, iOS 7 represents 30% of U.S. iOS traffic on the Jumptap network. In addition, men overall and people aged 18-30 appear to upgrade fastest.

In a nationwide look at adoption rates, iOS users in Mississippi reached the highest adoption, with 33% of users upgrading to iOS 7. Arizona, Kentucky and Louisiana were the next highest, with 33%, 31%, and 31% adoption, respectively.

It only took 12 hours from its public launch on Wednesday at 1:00pm ET for iOS 7 to reach 15% adoption amongst pre-existing iOS users, based on traffic in the Jumptap network. By the 36 hour mark, iOS 7 had reached nearly 30% adoption. Most of this came at the expense of iOS 6, with little change in iOS 4 or 5 request volume. By comparison, iOS 6 had achieved only 15% penetration by the 36-hour mark during its initial release.

Nationally, men upgraded slightly quicker then women, with 15% and 13% adoption rates respectively. These numbers are different from the rest of the analysis, representing all time since the release, instead of just the last six hours, which is why they appear lower than the national average.

Adoption Rate of iOS 7 over Time by Age Group:

Unsurprisingly, the younger age brackets are leading the charge on adoption, with 18% of 18-30 year-olds adopting the new OS, as compared to 13% of 30-50 year-olds and 13% of those over the age of 50. Again, these numbers are different from the rest of the analysis, representing all time since the release, instead of just the last six hours, which is why the appear lower than the national average.

Finally, we were a bit surprised by the geographic distribution of iOS 7 users. As of 9 am ET today, the lead adopting state for the new OS as a percentage of total iOS traffic volume wasn’t California, New York, or Massachusetts. The big winner was Mississippi, coming in with 33% iOS 7 traffic amongst iOS users.

As we combed through the data, a pattern began to emerge: The southern half of the country generally adopted faster than the northern half, with 30% and 28% overall iOS 7 adoption rates respectively. Perhaps residents with warmer weather were inclined to adopt faster…
